Abstract: The military Feldschmiede is not functional and consists in its cylindrical body and in adjacent parts of object-ferrous metal alloys, which can be found with or without coatings. Furthermore, small parts of asbestos and inside two leather bellows, linen, chalk putty-material and an oil bound paint can be found.
The metal displays a variety of corrosion, while the leather is buckling and showing natural degradation processes. Damage phenomena such as deformation, cracks, fractures and loss of substance accompany all other materials.
Scientific studies were followed by the mechanical and chemical removal of the corrosion products, with subsequent surface passivation at the center, which was finalized with plastic and wax-containing coatings. Stiffened leather materials have been treated with lanolin-containing emulsions solution.
The conservation was completed with reconstruction works based on original templates, with replacements of missing areas and consolidation measures, which were accompanied by the assembly of fragments.
Since autumn 2015, the portable device is housed in the Military Museum Kaunas.
